PA WARS 2010

WOW!!!  What another great day.

Special Thanks to Ricky and Michelle for your sponsorship this year.

Also…

A huge thank you to Veronica Hunapo who travelled back from Tauranga for our special day.

As usual she placed herself in the midst of things and did her thing.

Joanne Dickson joined Veronica on Monday morning at the 4EB

radio station to give an awesome follow up of the day.

The day began early as…again… for the members of Te Tirohanga-a-iwi

and all the early bird stall holders. Everything seemed to be a lot more

organised than last year, and we had so little trouble getting all the vehicles

off the park and although the games started later in the morning, we still

got through all the games pretty early.

We had a visit from the mayor of the Logan Shire this year. Pam Parker blew

us away with her presence at our day. She went around with our Chairman and

Wendy Melgert to meet all the stall holders and all the members of our roopu.

Big thanks for her turning up at our event when she was already into her holidays,

which began that very day.

Again we had great support from our community.

Donny and Julie Rewita came to our aid yet again with an awesome team of marshals.

Many thanks to all of the marshals who just showed up ready to get out on that field

and lead the teams into what ever they had to do to start accumulating points.

Where would we be without such great support!

Two more important people to be given special thanks to were our First Aid tent

attendants. Lana and Rosie did a fabulous job. We were let down by St Johns quite

late into our planning and if not for these two coming along we might not have had

our day. Thank you so much.

We had 16 teams competing this year. They all did an awesome job of playing

through all the games set out. The ingenious methods that team members came

up with without breaking the rules was tremendously funny. One such idea was

to have diving flippers on your feet but that you had to run in a forward motion…

the next thing you see is the flippers being put on backwards with the strap firmly

secured around the ankle and the member running unobstructed !!

The sack races were another incident where the smaller kids were heaved into the

sacks and jumped along by an older member on either side of the sack…technically

that’s not right…but where were the rules!

So much laughter on just one day. Our winners of the major trophies were

exceptionally happy after their day. The trophies will all come back again

next year for the next teams to compete for them… it is all just for fun after all.

Below are the teams who all took home the bacon.

Team Tainui 1st Place

Funnily enough, our winning team for the year happened to show up

extremely late…but they did turn up and after it’s all said and done

they walked away with 1st  place.

Ngati Hine Kakariki 2nd place

Outstanding award

Ngati Hine Kakariki came in at 2nd and were also awarded with the most

outstanding team award which is the trophy donated by the Nannies.

Korohesians I 3rd place

It was pretty great to see some of the younger eager team members of

Korohe sprinting about the park stretching and getting themselves geared

up for the games ahead.

As I potted about at our roopu stall I saw a group of Korohesian youngsters

coming my way and so because my own Mother is from Korohe Marae,

I called out, ‘Hey you guys, guess what? , they all looked kind of blankly,

so I told them that they were going to win. Well the looks were

saying, who on earth is that and what is she on! I had a bit of a

giggle…and then at the end of the day when I saw both teams

going up for a trophy…wow!!

Korohesians II 4th place

What did I tell you guys?!

The Maozzis – Most Humurous Award

These guys make everyones day. They were the most humourous

team out on the field on the day and so were awarded with the

Ngati Porou donated toilet seat, which I must add is a very nice trophy.

Tick Tock

Team Tick Tock  received the Hunapo donated trophy for being the

most fair team playing. Great code of ethics guys.

Pauline Pakoti

We also had a Kuia Whaea prize for a team member over 35 on the field.

Pauline was a member of Hoturoa Hori’s from Aotearoa Marae.

Brian Taylor

Received the over 35 Kaumatua Koroua prize for his participation in

the games as well. He was a member from the winning Team Tainui

from Te Marae o Awamarahi.

Who would ever have thought that this grumpy looking lady could make everyone laugh continuously through out the day.
But she did, and as usual she did an absolutely awesome job too! Thank you Mel...

We had quite a few stalls this year. Some beautiful kai on the menu

and some awesome clothing and wares of all kinds, beautiful arts and crafts.

It makes our day that extra bit more special when we have so many stalls

with that New Zealand flavour, not to mention the amount of people who

will come along for the day just to get a feed! Absolutely terrific.

Thanks to everyone who participated in one way or another.

Thank you to those who just came for a look, because you

all contributed in one way or another too.

So as we said last year…bring on 2011!!
