              About Us

TeTirohanga-A-Iwi is the name of a group of people based in Brisbane.
We originate from a small group of truck-drivers,
some of us are work companions, some of us are the wives and
some of us are friends of friends or we just heard about the
Kaupapa of this group through a function or word of mouth.

Regardless of where we originate, we have come together
in an effort to materialize a vision that has been with our people,
here in Brisbane, for a very long time.

Each week someone loses someone, and each week another family
struggles with the preparations of a tangi. Seeing this happen time and
time again, is what created Te Tirohanga-A-Iwi.

At this moment in time the Maori People do not have a PLACE
that has been built by them, or specifically for their cultural
purposes, but the need is tremendous.

The members of Te Tirohanga-A-Iwi have this Vision above all else...
to see the benefits that such a GOAL will be for Brisbane.
We have the passion to succeed...
the Wisdom to overlook tribal and even cultural differences for a
common purpose and Union, because we each remember that we
are not Tangata Whenua (the first people of the land)...
and we carry the Wairua to complete the Vision.

Our individual talents and passion build into a collective union
that creates such a Wairua(spirit) and that is what
we as individuals offer the Kaupapa.

As all things must begin somewhere, we begin at the beginning.
Our first step is to secure land... a big section of land that will
be able to be developed as money allows for a gradual expansion.
Our first buildings will be for that most important necessity of having
a PLACE for our Loves Ones who have passed on, to lie, and for
the accommodation of the family and friends who attend the Tangi.

That is the only thing that we work for at this stage.
There is much more to come but for now we focus on that one GOAL.

Our   Kaupapa

In February 2006 a group of truck drivers attended a funeral
on the Gold Coast.A conversation arose concerning the lack
of Resources Maori people have in Brisbane.

This conversation was the birth of
“Te Tirohanga – A – Iwi”
“Vision of the People”

Our Marae and Whanau back in Aotearoa are always there in
times of need i.e Tangi, hui, weddings, etc…

Here in Brisbane, when tragedy strikes we find that along with the grief
there is much more to organize.
Firstly somewhere our Loved Ones can lie for a Tangi.
Then accommodating and catering for family who travel from
near and far.The Hearts of the People who give of their homes for
use, Koha and other needs can lessen this.

BUT IT NEED NOT BE THIS WAY ! !

We are aware that groups have preceded us in an effort to build a Marae.
But our thoughts are that a Marae will bring too
many limitations and difficulties. The Maori population grows daily
here,we have different iwi where KAWA and TIKANGA differ.

Our aim is to concentrate on a Community Type Place.
A place that can be used for different purposes aside of tangi and
still maintain the same principles as a Marae.

“Te Tirohanga – A – Iwi” has always held an OPEN policy.

Anyone is welcome at our meetings.

There is only ONE GOAL.
To have A PLACE FOR ALL PEOPLE
UTILISED BY ALL,
FOR ALL PURPOSES.

We will march forward LIKE OUR TIPUNA with this goal in mind.
Keep the positive attitude that we began with, and our
VISION WILL BE ATTAINED…

Meeting/ February 24

It seems our idle
mode has come to
an end.

We look back on last
year as an excellent
learning curve.

Our meeting was held
at, QMS Te Whenua.
It is high time
we got back on track.

We agreed to begin
again on a consensus
basis.

Work together
as a whole as it worked
well for us this way.
